A plain catgut suture is a naturally absorbable surgical suture. Catgut absorbs by simple enzymatic mechanisms, and absorption is not as predictable as in synthetic sutures. Catgut sutures tend to absorb faster in infected tissues. Catgut suture initial tensile strength is lost within 7 to 10 days and is absorbed completely in 60 to 70 days. It is non-adhering and biologically inert. Best use for: general closure, obstetrics, gynecology, and gastro-intestinal tract surgery.
